Let’s Get Sporty With Aquarius Japanese Sports Drink!
Aquarius is a grapefruit-flavored sports drink first introduced in 1983 in Japan as a competitor’s brand of the sports drink Pocari Sweat and manufactured by The Coca-Cola Company. Aquarius contains electrolytes and amino acids as the main ingredient that draws people concerned with relieving fatigue and maintaining health and beauty; making it popular in Japan. The brand has been heavily marketed by giving away free samples in sporting events and was the official drink of the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona.
While Gatorade is very similar to sports water, sports water drinks such as Aquarius and Pocari Sweat are more electrolytes and water than sugar and flavour as seen in most of Gatorades and Powerades. Aquarius allows for ease of hydration by coming as close to the contents of sweat as drink science can get. By the year 2000, Aquarius and Pocari Sweat are the major brands of sports drinks in Japan. These two brands control about 90% of the sports drink market in Japan, for the past 25 years.
